Vincent Neave was born in London in 1948. A self-taught artist, he took up art as a profession after a back injury prevented him from continuing in the construction industry. He had had a varied career, which included five years in the RAF, followed by occupations such as carpenter, herdsman and long distance driver. He first moved to Bristol in 1969, and it was in Bristol that he eventually settled and embarked upon an artistic career. In 1983 he gave up painting temporarily and, in partnership with his wife Kate, spent nearly a year restoring and converting the ‘Glevum’, a 150 ton grain barge, built by Charles Hill and Son in Bristol in 1955. After conversion the ‘Glevum’ became a studio and art gallery in Bristol's revitalised city docks for many years. Since selling the ‘Glevum’ in the early 1990s he now devotes his life to nautical research and painting. Although primarily known for his marine art, he is equally passionate about the British landscape and has tackled many subjects from wildlife to racing cars. He was elected an Artist Member of Bristol Savages in 1996, and served as President in 2000/2001.
Though a large proportion of Vincent's paintings are commissioned, he has exhibited in various venues in Bristol and the West Country and in the U.S.A. His paintings are to be found in collections world wide. Vincent also exhibited some of his work at the 1996 International Festival of the Sea in Bristol, where he gave a public demonstration showing the stages involved in creating a painting. In 1997 one of his paintings, an oil of racing yachts, sold at Sotheby's London Auction Rooms; two more of his paintings, of racing yachts, sold there in May 2000. He has received commissions from many parts of the world including one from a Japanese businessman, Norikatsu Sanada in Yokohama. Mr Sanada had a great love of tea clippers and so he had The Ariel Tearooms built in the bay area of Yokohama. They were designed and built in the style of Victorian English tearooms. Vincent was commissioned to paint two watercolours of the tea clipper Ariel to be the centrepieces for each room | ||||||||
